SolidWorks Geeks

Hey Alex,

I just talked to my boss and got the approval to purchase some engineering standards and other books. My company is small but has a lot of parts, multiple sites (asia and US) and is very disorganized with files everywhere. I'm trying to clean things up and get us all organized and standardized. Can you suggest a list of books/subscriptions/standards etc. that I should ask to go on the budget?

ASME standards...is there a better way to view these than purchase individually, a web subscription somewhere?
Other industry standards and methods??
etc. etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Jason

Can't really comment on a list, but if you are considering a group of ASME standards, I would recommend joining for the member discount. On one or two books it may not pay off, but their books are EXPENSIVE and they have a good member discount.

I have seen some of the other books on the market and I would still recommend getting the standards themselves. Some of the books out there have some pretty liberal interpretations of the standards and some have some half-cocked ideas as to how the standards should be applied. As far as what standards to get, i would recommend the following, but the very least you should get ASME Y14.5M and ASME Y14.100:

ASME Y14.1 - Decimal Inch Drawing Sheet Size and Format
ASME Y14.1M - Metric Drawing Sheet Size and Format
ASME Y14.2M - Line Conventions and Lettering
ASME Y14.3M - Multiview and Sectional View Drawings
ASME Y14.4M - Pictorial Drawing
ASME Y14.5M - Dimensioning and Tolerancing
ASME Y14.5.1M - Mathematical Definition of Dimensioning and Tolerancing Principles
ASME Y14.6 - Screw Thread Representation
ASME Y14.7.1 - Gear Drawing Standards - Part 1 for Spur, Helical, Double Helical and Rack
ASME Y14.7.2 - Gear Drawing Standards - Part 2 for Spur, Helical, Double Helical and Rack
ASME Y14.8M - Castings and Forgings
ASME Y14.13M - Mechanical Spring Representation
ASME Y14.24 - Types and Applications of Engineering Drawings
ASME Y14.34M - Associated Lists
ASME Y14.35M - Revision of Engineering Drawings and Associated Documents
ASME Y14.36M - Surface Texture Symbols
ASME Y14.38a - Abbreviations and Acronyms
ASME Y14.41 - Digital Product Definition Data Practices
ASME Y14.100 - Engineering Drawing Practices

Also make sure to check out the Standards Wednes/Tuesday articles I did, more will be coming early in 2009.

If you buy one book get: http://new.industrialpress.com/node/976

It has virtually every standard you need and it comes with a CD so you can install on a central server and have everything on your desktop.
Hey Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. I do have the Machinery's Handbook and it is a great reference manual to have but by no means a set of standards.

I did some asking around my company and they use JSA/JIS standards in Taiwan....to some extent. Would you recommend we go with the same here in the US if all of our mfg is done in Taiwan and China?

Does anyone have recommendations as below with ASME but for JIS?

Also...I checked out IHS for purchasing standards. They have such a low level of information on their site on the standards, you have to know exactly what you want when you go there. They don't even tell you what comes in their "packs". Are there any other sites?

Thanks!

Jason
