Building up a chain for a bicycle. I have produced a link mated to a set path. I want to create multiple links whilst maintaining the mates. I have figured out how to use copy with mates however it does not allow
copying of mechanical mates. Is there a way around this ????

How about making a sub assembly and then use few of them to make a final full assembly
okay sounds good how do you make sub assembly?
You can insert an assembly into an assembly. So inserted assembly is called sub assembly and assembly in which the sub assembly is inserted is called main or top level assembly.

So a subassembly and then you can insert several of those in main or top level assembly and mate them.
Yer hey i have tried this but does still not solve the main problem of having to repeat like a hundrud plus mates for all the links of the chain. Seems like an uneccessary task to me.. dont know how to go around it.
Why??

You create assembly of few links. Now you can insert that as many times as you need and then using fewer mates, attach them all.
Can you share as what are you up to. May be looking the files lighten up some bulb on the head. ;)
Do you need this to act like a chain or can it be rigid? If so your best bet is to make this as a part. Draw two links(inner and outer) then a path and create a curve driven pattern. Regardless of how you do this you will need a sketch or edge for the path. I made a motorcycle chain but i painstakingly linked everything(not in SW) so it acted and drooped like a real chain. Never again:)

yer i did this. I want it to act like a chain so everylink follows the path.
This is an extremely complicated problem and it will never act like a chain unless you use Move with physical dynamics to drive it. Your best bet is to draw a solid or a path that you can link a point on each link to. More than likely a concentric point for one of the rollers on each link. I havent done this in SW but I have in Inventor where i drew a solid block that I hid, but the links followed the block. If this is a fixed gear bike or something with a coaster hub its much easier than if you are trying to go through a derailer. Can you upload your chain links and a shot of what you want your chain path to be.
