SolidWorks Geeks

Often I find myself coming up with random projects to work on here and there. I use Solidworks at work all the time, but I also like to use it at home for various projects. It's a hobby of mine.

Do you like to use Solidworks for fun too?

Yes sometimes.. and its really a fun to play around with SolidWorks...
I maybe an extreme case but if my computer is on at home, 99% I have SolidWorks running. Between blogging and writing the book, I rarely have time to model for fun but I have one model that I have been working on for a while. I am currently trying to do a realistic model of Homer Simpson using surfacing. How geeky is that? :)
haha, that's pretty cool. The only problem I see is that Solidworks isn't really designed to do animating so it's gonna be hard to make Homer Simpson walk around. Maybe you could use a 3d sketch to create a bone structure similar to that way animating software does it. Or maybe you could set up the Solidworks equations to control the 3d sketch bone structure... ;) now that would be geeky... it could even be a percentage of a full walking motion, or based off a sign wave or something to continue the motion... sounds like a pretty good project. Do you have any preliminary pics? :P

Ive made a model of my house. It can be quite usefull.
Oh, a kindred spirit.

I'm a bit of a junky for 3D design myself.
After 8-9 hours a day you'd thing I'd had enough. OH NO! Not me.
I'm constantly expeimenting with the power of parametrics and exploring to find all of SolidWorks capabilities.
After two years, I have a feeling I haven't even scratched the surface.

LOL

Same here Karen and every time I do that, I feel more hungry to know more and do more :)

I am the same way. Im rarely "challenged" at work so i put in a good bit of time on the side with design projects, writing tutorials and just modeling in general. I have other hobbies that include machining and fabrication so i design a lot of parts for myself:)

I use Solidworks for fun in my own projects as well. Last time I designed and build a chineese instrument called Erhu. Now I´m thinking of building an electric violin. I came up with this design yesterday, what do you think? =)

(It´s just a rough outline for trying out the idea. )

Josef,

Very cool design.

Wood, plastics, or composite?

Where are the pickups going to go?

Karen

Thank you very much Karen! =) I´m glad to hear you like it.

My idea is to have the body plate with the radius in aluminum. First laser cut, trumbled, roll bended and anodized.
The body going through the plate I´m thinking in wood or composite, haven´t decided yet, want it to be light weight and easy to color and varnish.
Then the neck is a standard violin neck in wood that I get from a store.

Then for pickups I´m going for this, which is a bridge with piezo elements built in, so I won´t need a seperate pickup.. :)
