Select Other
My favorite tip: getting the most out of the "Select Other" option.
Right click and select "Select Other".
Rather than select a face, edge, point, etc. from the list, you can right click on a face and hide it. Hide as many as you want til you can see the edge or whatever that you need to select. Left click to select it and exit the "Select Other" command.
