SolidWorks Geeks

My topic for SWW is about design resuse. I have originally planned to touch on the SolidWorks dissection tool (you know that function that makes SW wake up in the middle of the night and start opening files?)...but I have been wondering....

Does anyone know anyone who even uses it? The concept seems cool but, does it have any value in real life?

When they introduce the dissection, I was super excited about it. But as time progressed, I found it was the last thing you thought about when you wanted to reuse a design element. I have also noticed that most people in 2008 turned off the windows search, which made the tool unusable.
:)
Well this quiet discussion thread confirms my theory!

Just for fun, I am going to ask the group of people who attend my presentation if anyone uses it. I have a pretty good feeling that not a single hand will go up.
i've never heard of it, can you explain what it is?
At a certain predefined time, SolidWorks will go through your files and pull out the sketches and features that were used to make the parts.

Now while you are designing, the collected features are available via drag and drop from the Task Pane.
thanks for the reply, jeff. it should be a useful tool for machine designers.
BTW, There were a few that knew of it, but no one used it in production.
